Genre Bender: Where Creative Disciplines Collide!
Genre Bender returns with 10 of Seattle's most inventive artists, unleashing five totally new, category-defying performances for two nights only!
Each year, City Arts pairs artists who work in different media, inviting them to leap out of their comfort zones for a special collaboration. We commission each duo to create an unforgettable experience and the details of each performance remain secret until the curtain goes up on opening night.
"I was in complete awe throughout the entire show as performers...pushed the boundaries of art and made new and spectacular creations that left me wanting more. This was beyond just talent, it was full on collaborations between people of immense talent making things that were new and exciting, and absolutely wonderful." Jeremy Buben, Art Nerd, 2014
"Indisputably, the pairings in this year's Genre Bender produced interesting work that tackled heavy topics. The works clearly embraced the strengths and influences of each artist." Ciara McCormack, Seattle Dances, 2014
Genre Bender debuted as part of City Arts Fest in 2011—combining a poet and chocolate maker, a cellist and lighting designer, a dancer and filmmaker, among others—but is now produced as a stand-alone event twice a year. Curated by City Arts editorial staff and Genre Bender creative director Jennifer Zeyl, the event celebrates innovation and cross-pollination in Seattle’s thriving arts community.

Where: WildRose, 1021 E Pike Street in Seattle
Cost: FREE, 21+, ID required
inside this delicate frame… there is fire & brimstone
TINDER BOX featuring Amber Flame & okanomodé: sharp tongue, melodic flow, & a double shot of aries.
Amber Flame is an award-winning performer, composer, activist and educator who works extensively with students of all ages. She performs and records as composer, vocalist and guitarist for her band, Last of the RedHot Mamas, and produces multimedia shows through A Flame Production. She can be seen on a variety of stages throughout Seattle, performing original music, spoken word, plays, poetry, and fiction. She teaches music, poetry and performance through WITS, Arts Corps and local schools and community centers. Currently developing her one-woman play, Hands Above the Covers: Hairy Palms & Other Nightmares of a Church Kid, composing work for Last of the RedHot Mama's next album, and writing her first novel, she invites you to find her on Facebook and check out her next performances!
okanomodé (pronounced uh-kahn-uh-mah-day) is the grandson of a pastor & protégé of afronauts, poets, sex therapists & porn stars. A musical, literary & visual shape-shifter, he ceaselessly re-defines genre, gender, spiritual & sexual expression with irrefutable funk & grace, conjuring the likes of Nina Simone, Grace Jones, Alvin Ailey, Bjork, & Funkadelic. He is the writer of luci’s lamb: a post-punk epic musical faerie tale re-imagining the relationship between Jesus & Lucifer as the ultimate star-crossed love story. Fusing gospel tinged soulful balladry, romanticism & lush arrangements, with spaced out sissy-funk, & digital sleaze, okanomodé is avant-groid cabaret at it's finest. http://www.okanomode.com/
Feature will start promptly at 8:30 p.m. Get there early, grab a drink, food, and/or a seat, and prepare to be dazzled. Ten minute intermission between Feature & Open Mic.
Sign up for Open Mic anytime: before the feature, during the feature, during intermission and during Open Mic itself. Open Mic rules: one piece only – up to five minutes. Some exceptions are made for short poems one minute or less. Work must be original, however, any form is welcome – song, spoken word, performance art, stand-up, rap, speech, etc. Musical instruments are okay if used to support the performer’s voice as the main performance.
Seattle Spit works toward creating an inclusive and safe environment for all. We believe that every voice is important and necessary. We also believe that bringing words to the mic is a privilege and responsibility. Please bring pieces to the stage that are free of oppressive (sexist, cissexist, racist, classist, ageist, ableist, lookist, sizeist, homophobic, etc.) material. We encourage all Seattle Spit participants (attendees, features, open mic performers, etc.) to engage in dialogue that helps us all be better to ourselves and each other. Let's grow and write and love together!
Seattle Spit is a queer spoken word event that is free and open to all, 21+. Seattle Spit occurs monthly, on the second Thursday of each month at 8:30pm at WildRose (1021 E Pike Street in Seattle). For more information or to become involved with future Seattle Spit events, find "Seattle Spit" group on facebook or contact Marita Isabel or Imani Sims through facebook or [email protected].
